Interpreting Belief Functions as Probabilities: Dempster's rule of combination

چکیده

Dempster and Shafer introduced the belief function to measure some one’s degree of beliefs or subjective probabilities. In IFSA’99 and NAFIPS’9, we presented two distinct proofs that a belief function is, in fact, an inner probability using the methods of functional analysis and measure theory respectively. In this paper, we continue the study and derive a new Dempster’s rule of combination based on probability theory.

The Cumulative Rule for Belief Fusion

The problem of combining beliefs in the Dempster-Shafer belief theory has attracted considerable attention over the last two decades. The classical Dempster's Rule has often been criticised, and many alternative rules for belief combination have been proposed in the literature. The consensus operator for combining beliefs has nice properties and produces more intuitive results than Dempster's r...

The Combination of Evidence in the Transferable Belief Model

Description of the transferable belief model to quantify degrees of belief, based on belief functions. The impact of open-and closed-world assumption on conditioning. Presentation of a set of axioms justifying Dempster's rule for the combination of belief functions induced by 2 distinct evidences.

Evidential Reasoning in a Categorial Perspective: Conjunction and Disjunction of Belief Functions

The categorial approach to evidential reasoning can be seen as a combination of the probability kinematics approach of Richard Jeffrey (1965) and the maximum (cross-) entropy inference approach of E. T. Jaynes (1957). As a consequence of that viewpoint, it is well known that category theory provides natural definitions for logical connectives. In particular, disjunction and conjunction are mode...

Dempster's Rule as Seen by Little Colored Balls

Dempster’s rule is traditionally interpreted as an operator for fusing belief functions. While there are different types of belief fusion, there has been considerable confusion regarding the exact type of operation that Dempster’s rule performs. Many alternative operators for belief fusion have been proposed, where some are based on the same fundamental principle as Dempster’s rule, and others ...

The Assumptions Behind Dempster's Rule

This paper examines the concept of a combination rule for belief functions. It is shown that two fairly simple and apparently reasonable assumptions determine Dempster’s rule, giving a new justification for it.
